Larnaca Biennale 2023: LARNACA BIENNALE ANNOUNCES THEME & OPEN CALL FOR ARTISTS 2023
Larnaca Biennale 2023: October 11- November 24, 2023
Larnaca Biennale is excited to announce its thematic framework and officially opens an Open Call for artists, that will run until the 31st of May 2023.
Under the Home Away from Home theme conceived by curator Yev Kravt , artists are invited to develop and submit work exploring notions of home and belonging.
International Jury committee members of Larnaca Biennale 2023 are: art historian and museum director Lars Kærulf Møller from Denmark, art historian and exhibition curator Niki Papaspirou from Greece, conceptual multi-media artist Lia Lapithi from Cyprus and the Head fundraising and communications of Prince Claus Fund Bertan Selim from the Netherlands
In addition to the main exhibition, Larnaca Biennial as a city-wide project will host a series of artistic and culture parallel events such as theatre, performances, educational programs, concerts, activities, lectures, and workshops, based on the theme.
Theme: »Home Away from Home»
With Home Away from Home as its overarching theme, the 2023 Larnaca Biennale takes viewers on an exploratory journey through definitions of belonging, from the deep-rooted to the distant. More than just a built structure of walls, doors and furnishings, the notion of home might constitute something more abstract – a fleeting feeling, a treasured object, an evocative memory, a fixed place in time, an identity, or even a lengthy pursuit.
What does it mean to feel at home, and what do we need to feel it? What happens when a home disappears? And what do the homes of the future look like? In a globalised world, where flows of human movement respond to changing socio-economic, political and environmental concerns, questions such as these become a crucial guide for the forthcoming edition of the Larnaca Biennale.
Statement from Yev Kravt, Curator Larnaca Biennale 2023
“What is it that constitutes a home, beyond just bricks and mortar? Over the years and around the world, we’ve grappled back and forth with the many meanings of this word. For this biennale, I’ve set myself the task of unpacking notions of home and belonging – ideas that have shaped our lives and identities since birth. It will be filled with stories, some particular, some entirely universal, which all give rise to our sense of self. I’m thrilled to extend the invitation to artists, creators and makers of all varieties to join the conversation; submitting new propositions or revisiting existing work that considers this important theme.”
